When Adam sinned in the garden, he died. It was not a physical death since he continued to live after sinning. It was a spiritual death. Because of this, God and man's relationship was never the same. God is holy so He cannot commune with anything short of righteous, perfect and holy.

This is the reason why Jesus came. His finished work offers restoration of our original relationship and fellowship with God.

2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

"Born again" is a spiritual experience, not a religion. It is the spiritual birth of a person. It is the restoration of man to his original identity and position - a child of God.

The Bible tells us to celebrate this new life through water baptism. Water baptism is the outward expression of an inward transformation. This is the physical representation of what happens spiritually.

Romans 6:4 NIV

"We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."
